Boxing for beginners: a complete guide to getting started in Lisbon

They call it “The Sweet Science.” Boxing isn’t about brute force or aggression. It is perhaps the most refined and technical combat art there is: distance, timing, angles, rhythm. It’s chess in motion. And at Be Water Lisboa, it’s taught as such, with real mechanics, correct technique from day one, and a coach who is a 6x national champion.

What boxing is (and what it isn’t)

Boxing is a striking martial art that uses exclusively the fists, combined with footwork, head movement and defensive technique. There are no kicks, no prolonged clinching, no ground work. It’s combat reduced to its purest essence. And that limitation is what makes it so deep.

If you’ve read our article on Muay Thai, the difference is clear: Muay Thai uses 8 weapons (fists, elbows, knees, shins). Boxing uses only the hands. But that restriction forces you to develop a precision, timing and footwork that no other martial art works with such depth.

That’s why many MMA fighters and Muay Thai practitioners add boxing to their training: the quality of hand work and defence improves exponentially.

What you’ll learn in the first months

In the first months, the focus is building a solid technical foundation. At Be Water, we don’t throw beginners at the heavy bag without fundamentals. First you learn the mechanics:

  • Stance and guard: the foundation of everything. How to position your body to protect, generate power and move efficiently
  • The 4 fundamental punches: jab, straight, hook and uppercut. Each with specific mechanics that maximise power and minimise exposure
  • Footwork: the difference between a good boxer and an excellent one. Lateral movement, pivots, cutting the ring, maintaining distance
  • Defence: slip, roll, parry, cover. At Be Water, defence is taught from the very first classes, not as an afterthought
  • Combinations: linking 2, 3, 5 punches with fluid transitions between attack and defence
  • Shadow boxing: the fundamental solo drill. Pure technique, no impact, total focus on mechanics

Sounds like a lot? It is. And that’s exactly why boxing is so addictive. There’s always something new to refine. You can train for 20 years and still discover nuances in the jab.

What a boxing class at Be Water looks like

Boxing classes take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:30am, with coach Arménio Reis, 6x national champion and 2x WBC amateur champion. The structure follows a consistent format:

  1. Warm-up and mobility. Boxing-specific preparation: shoulders, wrists, hip rotation, cardiovascular activation
  2. Base technique. Stance, guard, punch mechanics with focus on correct form
  3. Bag work. Heavy bags for power, speed bags for timing and quick hands, double-end bags for precision and distance
  4. Pad work. In pairs or with the coach, replicating real combat patterns. This is where technique solidifies under pressure
  5. Final conditioning. High-intensity rounds to close the session

And what about sparring? It’s not mandatory. At Be Water, sparring is only introduced when the student is technically and physically prepared, usually after several months. Most classes focus on bags, pads and technical drills. When sparring happens, it’s always controlled and supervised.

Boxing vs Muay Thai: which to choose?

It’s the question we hear most. The honest answer: they’re complementary, not competing.

  • Boxing: 2 weapons (hands). Deep specialisation in hand work, head movement, footwork and close-range defence. If you enjoy precision and rhythm, boxing is for you.
  • Muay Thai: 8 weapons (fists, elbows, knees, shins). Broader toolkit, clinch work, more body contact. If you enjoy versatility and raw power, Muay Thai is for you.

Benefits of boxing beyond technique

Boxing isn’t just about learning to throw punches. It’s one of the most complete forms of training that exist:

  • Cardiovascular conditioning. Boxing rounds are among the most demanding cardio formats out there. Your system adapts quickly.
  • Coordination and reflexes. Hand-eye coordination at high intensity, hitting moving targets, reacting to visual stimuli.
  • Stress management. Hitting pads is one of the most effective forms of stress release. Cortisol drops, endorphins rise.
  • Core and balance. All boxing mechanics pass through the core. Every punch, every slip, every movement recruits the entire trunk.
  • Real self-confidence. Built on tangible competence, not motivational quotes. When you know you can execute a combination with timing and precision, it changes how you move through the world.

And an important point: boxing has one of the gentlest entry curves in martial arts. There’s no ground fighting, no complex clinch, no kicks. It’s an ideal gateway for anyone who’s never trained anything.

Do I need to be fit to start?

No. Training gets you fit. You don’t need to be fit to start. It’s the same answer we give for Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai and functional training. Come as you are. Exercises are adapted to your level, coach Arménio adjusts the intensity, and you progress at your own pace.
