What is your first class at Be Water like?

Bruno Salgueiro · · 4 min read

The decision is already made. You want to start training, but you don’t know what to expect. That’s completely normal — everyone goes through it. In this article, I’ll explain exactly how your first class at Be Water works, so you arrive prepared and without surprises.

First things first: book your trial class

At Be Water, your first class is free and commitment-free. Just send us a message on WhatsApp (933 869 791) or fill out the contact form on our website. We’ll suggest the best time slot based on the modality you’re interested in — whether that’s functional training, Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai or Boxing.

If you’re not sure which to choose, don’t worry. In most cases, we recommend starting with functional training — it’s the ideal entry point for anyone who wants to improve their general fitness before exploring martial arts.

What to bring

You don’t need any special equipment for your first class. Just bring:

  • Comfortable sportswear (t-shirt, shorts or leggings, socks)
  • Training shoes (for functional training classes)
  • Towel and water bottle
  • Flip-flops for the changing room

For Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai or Boxing classes, you train barefoot on the dojo mat. If you decide to continue, you can get the specific equipment later — a gi for Jiu-Jitsu, or gloves for Boxing and Muay Thai. But for the first class, the basics are all you need.

How to get here

We’re at Avenida do Brasil 7, in Campo Grande — a ten-minute walk from Campo Grande metro station. If you’re driving, there’s EMEL parking at the back of the building. When you walk in, you’ll find our lounge and co-working area. Reception is right there — introduce yourself and we’ll take care of everything.

What happens when you arrive

Arrive 10 to 15 minutes before class. One of our coaches will welcome you, show you around the space — the gym, the dojo, the changing rooms — and explain how the session will work. We’ll ask about your training history, any injuries, and what you’re looking for. This helps us adapt the workout to your level from the very first minute.

What the class is actually like

It depends on the modality you choose:

Be Water Functional Training

A 60-minute group session. It starts with a structured warm-up, followed by the main block — which may be strength, explosiveness, conditioning, or a combination. Every exercise is adaptable: the coach gives you variations based on your level. You’re not competing with anyone. You’re working at your own pace, with constant technical guidance. Groups are small by design — we’re not a factory churning out 30 people per class.

Jiu-Jitsu

You begin with a specific ground warm-up, followed by technique work (fundamental positions, control movements) and then applied training with a partner. Master Alexandre Izidro — 6th degree black belt with over 25 years of experience — structures the classes so that beginners and advanced practitioners train together productively.

Muay Thai or Boxing

General and specific warm-up, basic technique work (stance, guard, footwork), bag work and pad work with a partner. The coaches correct your mechanics from the very first repetition. In martial arts, learning correctly from the start makes all the difference.

After class

The training ends, but the experience doesn’t. Have a shower in our changing rooms (equipped with lockers and all amenities), then head to the lounge to relax. Many members stay to chat, work in the co-working space, or simply decompress.

If you enjoyed it and want to continue, we’ll talk about the available plans. We have options from €64.90/month (2x per week) up to unlimited access at €94.90/month. All plans give you access to every modality — functional training, Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai and Boxing. And there’s no lock-in contract.

The most important thing

You don’t need to be fit to start. You need to start to get fit. At Be Water, everyone starts somewhere — the only requirement is showing up. We’ll take care of the rest.

We’re at Av. do Brasil 7, Campo Grande, Lisbon. Hours: Monday to Friday 7am–9pm, Saturday 10am–1pm.
